Ailerons are crucial for the successful flight of an aircraft, so precision is key when it comes to manufacturing. When our client needed a 5-axis fixture for the machining of their ailerons we were happy to help, making use of our experience within the sector.
The fixture was sandwiched between both the port and starboard ailerons, in order for 5-axis machining to take place around the outer edges and drill in critical holes. The components didn’t just rely on clamping pressure though; they were also vacuum clamped in position, meaning that both halves of the fixture had to be perfect to nominal size.
In the picture opposite you can see the precision linear rails that allowed the inner profile boards to move out of the way, allowing for component removal and installation.
